Taxing the rich to give to the poor?

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

I have been so busy working on my business websites that I’ve not had the time to write my thoughts here…  This means it is time to Get Political!

Is a job a right or a goal?

To listen to the politicians running Congress and the Whitehouse, you could conclude that a job is a right.  Of course, you would say, every one has a right to get a job, why not make it a goal?

If someone does not have a job, then the government seems to be taking the position that the rich owes them a paycheck.  “Those making over $250,000 a year will see their taxes increase a little.”  President Obama said that during his speech before congress last week.

The idea is the money will go towards paying health care costs for the uninsured and that sounds nobel.  Poor people with out health insurance are much more susceptible to disease and physical ailments.  Who doesn’t want to help them?  Not those in power who are suggesting we take money from the rich and give to the poor, in my humble opinion.

Taking an extra 10% in taxes from someone making $250,000+ does give the poor some money.  Using simple numbers, lets explore the idea.  If the top 2% of our nation make more than $250,000, then lets assume an average income by the upper 2% at around $500,000.  The number is probably MUCH higher.

2% of 303 million (the population of the US) equals 6 million people making an average of $500,000 a year.  That equals $3 trillion.  These 6 million people are already paying $1.35 trillion dollars in taxes, so a 10% increase in tax burden increases the government cash register by $300 billion.

Best estimate I can find for uninsured is 45 million.  I doubt the number is that high, but for our purposes we’ll accept the the number.  $300 billion divided by 45 million equals $6,667.

President Obama during his speech before congress said the uninsured will see an extra $2400 as a result of these increased taxes.  What happens to the other $4200?  That will be addressed in a future article.  For now, lets look at another approach to taking from the rich.

Not all 6 million of the top 2% own their own business, so we can not make a direct employment comparison, but lets have some fun with the idea of forcing 6 million people to give up $25,000 for the good of the country.

What if the 6 million rich folks were given a choice to either pay the extra 10% in taxes OR hire a new American employee with a minimum take home pay of $25,000 a year?  Which would the rich choose?

I believe the rich would hire a worker.  Because then the rich can turn the $31,000 ($25,000 take home plus payroll expenses) into a revenue generating operation and expand operations.

Lets assume only HALF of the 6 million rich people took the hire an employee route.  The government would have instantly created 3 million jobs and generated more than $163 billion in increased tax revenue ($13.5 billion in new employee income taxes and $150 billion in rich people taxes).  PLUS there is now $75 billion in the form of payroll checks going out to people who didn’t have a job.  That $75 billion goes to buy more milk, cars, and homes.  Now the Farmer, Manufacturer and Home Builder can buy raw materials which put other people to work…

Food for thought…Making a job a right kills productivity because the poor has less incentive to lift a finger.  Making a job a goal gets the poor to become a revenue generating resource that drives the economic engine of our country.

E-Mailing in her sleep!

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

sleep-emailing1When I was young, on several confirmed occasions, I sleep walked.  I don’t believe I have ever sleep eMailed.  Much to my surprise, there is a recorded case where a woman sent out invitations to a party in her sleep.

Well, at least that was the excuse she gave her spouse.  Sure honey, I invited these people while I was sleeping (wink..wink..nudge..nudge).

Ok, my future as Jay Leno’s substitute is looking grim, but here is a link to the story of

Somnambulism in the Internet AgeSomnambulism is one of those BIG words doctors make up to help justify the expense of medical school.

While in the army, we joked about how great it would be to be able to sleep with our eyes open.  The drill Sgts use to scream at us that if they saw our eyes close we would get dropped for push ups.  One guy in our company did sleep with his eyes open.  We all thought he was just a fibber until one day we watched him NOT blink for several minutes and the droll dribble down his shirt.  Talk about FUNNY!

They are calling sleep eMailing “zzz-mailing”.  The article even points to the complex nature of logging into your eMail, typing in your password, composing a message, picking the recipient and hitting send.  However, I don’t remember when the last time I had to type in my password at home?  Usually I just open the eMail app and type away.

Never-the-less, if it is a REAL case, then we must look at our society where people have become so pluged in that we even eMail people in our sleep!  One thing’s for sure, this women did not suffer from witers block!

Do We Play Games?

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

gamer-copyright2As I dive deeper into WordPress I am finding there are plug-in games. One of my customers asked me to install a couple of games on his new WordPress site that we are scheduled to roll out on June 1.

Initially I was resistant to the idea, but after installing a few games to test out the idea, I find that it fits with-in the Personality Based Marketing approach that I am creating.

If 62% of of the time internet users browse the net as a source of entertainment, then it makes sense to offer entertaining activities in addition to great blog content.

I’m not sure what the long term out look is for a platform that requires video games to hold visitor’s attention, but we shall see!

In the mean time, please enjoy the new games that I am testing on this site.  If you get a chance, please drop me a comment with your views on the online game playing idea.  I visited dozens of blogs per week and I haven’t really run into many that had online video games…  So I am curious just how effective the medium will be?

Those of you who know me know that I love Nascar.  My favorite drivers are Dale Earnhart Jr and Tony Stewart.

Go Guys!

In a recent Dallas News article, the economic woes we all face is expected to hit Nascar hard.  High ticket prices, sponsor cut backs and jobless fans are all expected to take a big chunk of Nascars business.

This season begins my 30th year of following Nascar.  While some years have been from a far via news and internet, most years I catch at lease ten races on TV.  My favorite races are Daytona, Talladega and Bristol.

Social Networking Getting Started

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

What is social networking?

The idea behind social networking is word-of-mouth marketing.  Groups of people align themselves by interests, identities, and professions and through these alignments build relationships.

Why use social networking?

One is the loneliest number, as the song says.  People network socially to meet new people.  Finding points of commonality can be difficult in a disconnected world; but in the online world, interests, identities, and professions are variables in a massive database.  Sorting these variables can connect the searcher with a social network larger than any face-to-face net-worker could ever imagine.

How does social networking work?

Raindrops keep falling on my House

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

I have always loved the rain.  No doubt I am an odd Californian, even though I do not have web feet.  Two weeks ago we were knee deep in snow with outside temperatures in the high 20’s.  This week it is raining, hard, and the temperature is in the mid 50’s.  The power of Mother Nature is incredible, or she is a woman who can not make up her mind.

From time to time I find myself surfing information on Wikipedia.  This evening, while watching Lost in Translation with Kay, I looked up rain.  Rain is liquid precipitation or atmospheric condensation.  Not all rain makes it to the ground, some of the rain evaporates before it reaches the surface.

Rain plays a role in the hydrologic cycle in which moisture from the oceans evaporates, condenses into drops, precipitates (falls) from the sky, and eventually returns to the ocean via rivers and streams to repeat the cycle again. The water vapor from plant respiration also contributes to the moisture in the atmosphere.

Ordinarily the rain in Oregon is a constant drizzle during the winter months, but this year we are getting large wind gusts mixed with rain drops the size of quarters.  I might be exaggerating on the rain drop size.  So far we have not had any problems with excessive rain where we live.  There is flooding in several locations around Portland, but Fairview, so far, is able to manage the rain.  I have not driven over to see the Sandy River, but so far it seems her banks are holding.

Yesterday I drove into Portland to meet with a new client to discuss a trade show display.  The Willamette River was very high, maybe 10′ above the usual water level, but the banks were holding.  The water was muddy the surface and choppy, like a big dirty kid was sloshing around in a gigantic tub.

On the way home from my meeting, I heard that parts of I5 were expected to flood in the Seattle area.  The report said one of the rivers was expecting waters 10 feet above flood stage.  Again the questions arise.  What exactly is flood stage:

Definition per someone from Wikipedia.

Flood stage means a man made feature is underwater. The term refers to the general condition in which a water level is high enough to cause flooding or water damage to man made elements near a body of water. It applies only to a highly localized point, and not to any standard reference point such as the height of a riverbank, and does not refer to the height above the normal level of a body of water.

The term often confuses the public because it is misunderstood and misused in number of ways. It is often confused with the term “flood gage” which measures the actual height of water above the normal non-flood high point of a body of water, which may not cause any damage or flooding to man made features.

I picture two news reporters standing on the banks of the river making bets on how deep there “flood” stick is now.  Of course there is probably electronic equipment that makes the calculation, but considering how often the news reporters are wrong my vision could be right.

I hope everyone is staying warm and dry!
