Online Gamer Anonymous
My name is Ed and I’m an online gamer.
Over the last several years I’ve had friends offer me amazing business opportunities, get rich quick schemes as I call them. Each and every time I said no. Except for online gaming. I avoided D&D Online (Dungeon and Dragons) because of the monthly subscription price. Two years I stayed pure, but my addict step-son got me hooked. Well, yesterday I took my first steps towards recovery, I canceled my subscription to DDO Online! Besides, I’m having more fun playing the XBox 360 and Tiger Wood ’09 Golf.
Not 30 minutes after canceling my subscription to DDO, but my XBOX 360 died (the fabled ring of death). Obviously Microsoft knew about this horrible situation, because my warranty is good for the ring of death for three years–of course I must be able to log on to their system and complete the online registration process. So far no luck in that arena!
Already I feel like I am having withdrawals. My mind is racing, I feel the urge to pick up the game controller, I’ve even looked at Playstation 3 ads in the paper. I have got it bad.
I pretty much stopped playing games on the PC several years back. I’ve always felt it was cheaper to buy a game console than constantly upgrading my PC to keep up with the latest and greatest. Friends of mine are always worried about playing the latest game at the highest resolution level, similar to my friends from the 80′s who wanted the biggest stereo. Graphics alone don’t make the game. Give me my old Atari 2600.
Like television, the gaming industry leans towards style over substance. What happened to fun game play? Whatever happened to King’s Quest, Zork and Wizardry? These were great games with amazing entertainment value. My grandsons play first person shoot’em up games with rocket launchers, plasma ray guns and tanks. I don’t think they would have survived the days of Commando, Donkey Kong and Top Speed.
There are still good games out there, don’t get me wrong. I am hooked on Tiger Woods Golf these days. I thought it was a bad CD, the game kept crashing, but now I know it was my XBox 360 going bad. I only hope that when I get it back from service (if I can ever get it scheduled for repair), I don’t lose all my saved games.
SceneIt is another favorit of mine. This is the first movie triva game that I can get into. It comes with four controllers and is perfect for the entire family. Until my brother came to town, I was in the in-house champion. Tom showed me.
Now Microsoft has the service support center offline and I can not process my console repair request. I can feel the jitters already starting. Oh my g… Wait, my DDO account is still active until April 2009!
I hope all is well with you ‘all. Have a great day. Bye.
